Iran’s cement industry | Gharb Cement Co. From a cost standpoint, #Iran’s #cement industry is one of the lowest-cost producers globally: its cost of production is estimated at $18/tonne versus the global average of $40/tonne. The industry benefits from low costs in raw materials, energy and labour. Gharb Cement Company was established in 1974 and listed on the TSE in 1995. Located in the west of Iran, in Kermanshah, Gharb’s production plant has a production capacity of 1.2m tonnes per year. The company has a market share of approximately 1.5%, competing in a fragmented industry comprising an estimated 68 plants across the country. The total nominal capacity of Iran’s cement production is more than 80million tonnes; current industry capacity utilisation is about 60%. In the previous fiscal years of 2015/2016 and 2016/2017, Gharb generated 55% and 26% (respectively) of its revenues from exports. The reason for the fall in exports in 2016/2017 was import tariffs imposed by Iraq on Iranian cement. Nevertheless, given the strategic positioning of its site close to Iran’s western border, it can monetise improving conditions from exports and domestic demand if and when they occur. #IranInvestment #FrontierMarket #EmergingMarket #MutualFund  #GriffonCapital

Part II: همكاران سيستم | System Group - the most reputable enterprise software solution company in Iran As the market leader, System Group has over 39,000 corporate customers in Iran. Approximately 50% of its revenues are reoccurring, derived from the renewal and technical support of existing software and clients. About 35% of revenues come from the sale of new software and clients; the balance is from installation and training services. In early 2017, System Group received approval to list on the #TSE, having been on the #IFB (the junior exchange) for the preceding five years. Positive sector drivers and company-specific competitive advantages include: • Greater corporate transparency & competition (post sanctions) will boost product demand and increase penetration • High switching cost (i.e. very high customer renewal rates/retention) for customers & high market share/strong brand • High free cash flow generation and strong balance sheet • No State regulation controlling prices or costs • Management owned business #IranInvestment #MiddleEastInvestment #IranPortfolioManagement #FrontierMarket #EmergingMarket #IranStockMarket #IranInvest #GriffonCapital

Iran's parliament ratifies the revised budget bill The Parliament approved the revised budget for the next Iranian fiscal year (March 2018 to March 2019). The CBI’s official IRR/USD rate in the #budget is now expected to be set close to 41,000, versus the current official rate of 37,299. The #CBI has taken several steps to stabilise the local currency, including (a) deciding to issue foreign-currency bonds – purchased in rials, but calculated in (and thus giving exposure to) US dollars, with annual yields of ~4%; (b) holding several gold auctions/pre-sales, with prices fixed for 5-month and 12-month delivery; and (c) allowing banks a 2-week window to issue 1-year fixed certificates of deposit with an annual yield of 20% (in contrast to the 15% CBI-mandated cap on long-term bank deposits set in September 2017). #IranInvestment #IranEconomy #MENAInvestment #EmergingMarket #GriffonCapital

Rise in trade value at IME, physical commodity trading accounted for 40% As we near the end of the Iranian fiscal year (20 March 2018), the ~$23bn in trade value registered since 21 March 2017 at the Iran Mercantile Exchange (#IME) is already 39% higher than in the previous entire fiscal year, setting a new record. Physical #commodity trading accounted for approximately 40% of these transactions. Golgohar Mining & Industrial Co, Iran’s largest producer of iron ore pellet and concentrate, is now also expected to start making sales on the IME, though continuing to supply major domestic steel producers based on a preset pricing formula derived from Khuzestan’s Steel’s billet price. Golgohar has now also completed two main projects: a new line for producing iron ore concentrate with 2m tonnes of capacity, and a direct-reduced iron mill with 1.7m tonnes of capacity. #IranInvestment #IranCapitalMarket #IranStockMarket #FrontierMarket #EmergingMarket #IranEconomy#MENA #MiddleEast #GriffonCapital

What steps has the Central Bank of Iran (#CBI) taken to stabilise the #FX market? Three main solutions have been put forward thus far: • Banks are allowed to issue one year fixed certificates of deposits with an annual yield of 20% for a 2 week window only (versus 15% CBI mandated cap on long term bank deposits set in August/September 2017) • CBI issued foreign currency bonds (purchased in rials, but gives exposure/calculated in #US #dollars with yields of ~4%/annum) • Gold coin auctions/pre sales (prices fixed for 6 month and 12 months delivery). The impact thus far has been to stabilise the FX market (~10% off the lows set earlier in February), a rise in bond yields/drop in bond prices (average YTMs of T-bills from 16-17% to ~20%). The impact on the #equities market has thus far been relatively muted- though if bond yields stay high/move higher, then this could become a greater headwind for equities. #IranInvestment #StockMarket #portfolioManagement #AssetManagement #Portfolio #Bonds #Equity #VentureCapital #GriffonCapital

IRAN-INDIA DOUBLE TAXATION TREATY AND ITS IMPLICATIONS During President Rouhani's visit to India last week, an agreement was signed between the two countries for the avoidance of double taxation and prevention of fiscal evasion. Among others, the pact will facilitate an enhanced information exchange between Iran and India, in line with international standards to promote transparency and uniformity. Put in a broader context, one can really observe how the building blocks of a bolstered economic cooperation framework are being built one by one between Iran and other key markets.
